DEMOGRAPHY Summary The population of Bhutan was 6,34,982 in 2005 which is projected to grow to around 8,87,000 in 2030, an increase of 40% within the next 25 years. The population is expected to grow at an estimated average annual increase of 1.4%. whereas calculated total population of Thimphu NCR, stands at 153,513 comprising of 94260 (61.40%) urban and 59253 ( 38.60 ) rural population, with Male population of 81,930 (53.38%) & Female population of 71,583 (46.61%). Extensive mobility within the country across all Dzongkhas. Thimphu ranked as the highest population attractor whereas Wangdue has highest out migration. Number of persons living per square kilometer will steadily increase from 16 persons in 2005 to an estimated 23 persons by 2030. ‘As per Census2005, Thimphu NCR has the Literacy Rate of 61.89% with Male having 71.50% literacy while Female lagging behind with 50.90% literacy rate. Wangdue had the highest Labour Force Participation rate with 64.8%, while Paro had the lowest rate if 55.2%. Unemployment ranged from 2.2 % in Chapcha to 5.5 % in Thimphu. Thimphu had the highest unemployed female at 8.4% and male unemployed at 4.2% DEMOGRAPHY Summary According to 2005 census among those employed Punakha had the highest employment in Agriculture sector while Thimphu have the lowest. Chuukha (Chapcha) had the highest employment in industry sector. Punakha had the lowest rate of industrial employment. In service sector employment the Thimphu ranked top and least employment in service sector in Punakha Dzongkha. Number of persons living per square kilometer will steadily increase from 16 persons in 2005 to an estimated 23 persons by 2030 Birth rate (birth rate per 1000 population) is expected to decline from an estimated 26.1 in 2005 to 14.5 in 2030 The death rate (number of death per 1000 population) is expected to fall from 7.7 in 2005 to 6.8 by 2030. Between 2005 and 2030, because of the declining fertility, the proportion of population aged under 15 years is projected to decline from 33.1 to 22.8 percent.
