BSI Construction standards

BSI brings a new and refreshed approach to the area of standardization. The emphasis of standards has been extended beyond technical issues to include process issues of key strategic importance to the construction sector. The policy remit has been widened to include standards relating to all aspects of the built environment. To compliment the change in policy focus, the construction standards committees at BSI are also being reorganized into seven core areas, namely: Design Built environment engineering Facilities management Structures Infrastructure Construction products Site operations

This new portfolio addresses requirements for the whole of the built environment. BSI has already mapped out an action plan for the future and has reorganized the technical committees to mirror the way the industry actually works. This will lead to a new generation of performance related standards which will improve innovation and competitiveness in the UK and overseas. The standards and the changes needed to reflect the new demands for smart, sustainable construction for the future.

BS 8300:2009 Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people Code of practice
BS 8300 gives recommendations for the design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people (including, where appropriate, disabled children). It applies to car parking provision, setting-down points and garaging, access routes to and around all buildings, and entrances to and interiors of new buildings. The recommendations also apply to routes to facilities associated with and in the immediate vicinity of buildings.

BS 9999:2008 Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings
BS 9999 gives recommendations and guidance on the design, management and use of buildings to achieve acceptable levels of fire safety for all people in and around buildings. BS 9999 is applicable to the design of new buildings, and to alterations, extensions and changes of use of an existing building, with the exception of individual homes and with limited applicability in the case of certain specialist buildings. It also provides guidance on the ongoing management of fire safety in a building throughout the entire life cycle of the building, including guidance for designers to ensure that the overall design of a building assists and enhances the management of fire safety. It can be used as a tool for assessing existing buildings, although fundamental change in line with the guidelines might well be limited or not practicable.

BS 6031:2009 Code of practice for earthworks

BS 6031 gives recommendations and guidance for unreinforced earthworks forming part of general civil engineering construction, with the exception of dams. It also gives recommendations and guidance for temporary excavations such as trenches and pits. BS 6031 reflects the actual processes that might be followed on a typical project to deliver the earthworks. In practice earthworks design is an iterative process where the employer, consultant, main contractor, sub-contractors and construction validation team often take design decisions. To reflect this situation BS 6031 includes some subjects in more than one clause.

BS 8493:2008+Amendment 1:2010 Light reflectance value (LRV) of a surface. Method of test

BS 8493 specifies the method of test to determine the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of different surfaces of materials. LRV is the proportion of visible light reflected by a surface compared to the sensitivity to light of the human eye.

Structures
This section covers standards for the design and execution of buildings and civil engineering works. Written for structural engineers, the standards and publications in this area cover design principles and set out mathematical formulae and calculation methods. Buildings (above four stories) and other structures such as bridges, chimneys, towers, masts, and pipelines are covered. So too are requirements for the design of foundations, embankments, and piles. Individual construction materials and the impacts of loadings are also covered.
BS EN 1090-2:2008 Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures. Technical requirements for the execution of steel structures
BS EN 1090-2 specifies requirements for execution of steel structures, in order to ensure adequate levels of mechanical resistance and stability, serviceability and durability. This standard specifies requirements for execution of steel structures in particular those that are designed according to all parts of BS EN 1993 and the steel parts of composite steel and concrete structures designed according to all parts of BS EN 1994.

BS 5268-3:2006 Structural use of timber. Code of practice for trussed rafter roofs
BS 5268-3 covers the design, fabrication and use of trussed rafters for roofs. This standard provides recommendations on the strength grades of timber used in the fabrication of rafters and other critical design issues. Guidance on the handling, storage and installation of fabricated rafters is given. Information to be exchanged between the trussed rafter designer and the building designer is also listed.

Construction Products
Construction products covers an industry of 40 billion annually and 40% of total construction output. The main users of standards are manufacturers, inspectors and testers, but other parts of the construction process also use the standards. Many of the standards are harmonized product standards or supporting methods of test for the Construction Products Directive 1989. The work programme is now nearly concluded but second generation of standards will address dangerous substances.
BS 8500-1:2006 Concrete. Complementary British Standard to BS EN 206-1. Method of specifying and guidance for the specifier
BS 8500-1 is intended for use by specifiers of concrete. BS 8500-1 gives five approaches to the specification of concrete, with the standard describing the correct way of compiling specifications for designated, designed, prescribed, standardized prescribed, and proprietary concretes. BS 8500-1 also gives detailed guidance for the specifier, including advice on exposure classes, aggregate classes, intended working life, temperature, etc., presented as a series of tables with accompanying explanatory text.

BS 8902:2009 Responsible sourcing sector certification schemes for construction products. Specification
As the importance of green procurement strategies in the building and construction sectors grows, government is requiring suppliers and contractors to improve their sustainability performance. Responsible sourcing schemes are a major part of this activity. Responsible sourcing is the management of sustainable development in the provision or procurement of a product. BS 8902 provides a framework for the development of sector certification schemes for responsible sourcing of construction products. It gives requirements for the management, development, content and operation of sector certification schemes for responsible sourcing and supply of construction products.
