Bertrand Russell was leIt an orphan at an age oI three.Instead oI being sent to school he
was taught by governesses and tutors, and thus acquired a perIect knowledge oI French and
German. In 1890 he went into residence at Trinity College, Cambridge, became a very high
Wrangler and obtained a First Class with distinction in philosophy.
Contributions to Logic:
Bertrand Russell is considered one oI the Iounders oI analytic philosophy along with his
protege Wittgenstein and his elder Frege, and is widely held to be one oI the 20th century's
premier logicians. He co-authored, with AlIred N. Whitehead, Principia Mathematica, an attempt
to ground mathematics on logic. His philosophical essay 'On Denoting has been considered a
'Paradigm oI Philosophy. Both works have had a considerable inIluence
on logic, mathematics, set theory, linguistics, and philosophy.
Bertrand Russell is generally credited with being one oI the Iounders oI analytic
philosophy. He was deeply impressed by GottIried Leibniz and wrote on every major area oI
philosophy except aesthetics. He was particularly proliIic in the Iield oI metaphysics, the logic
and the philosophy oI mathematics, the philosophy oI language, ethics and epistemology.
Another contribution oI Bertrand Russell is in his paper 'Logical Atomism (Contemporary
British Philosophy. Personal Statements). He exposed his views on his philosophy, preceded by a
Iew words on historical development.
