Screening effect of Buccal Shields and Lip Pads holding off the Buccinator mechanism and Orbicularis Oris pressure
Counterbalancing effect of the tongue if the dorsum is in contact with the palate
On swallowing, a negative atmospheric pressure is created that sucks the cheeks into the interocclusal space, to help maintain the interocclusal space at postural resting position before the mandible drops at the end of the deglutition cycle
Vestibular components: Shields, Lip pads, Canine clasps, Labial arch, and Labial arch loop
FR I
Contiguity of buccal musculature and tongue to the teeth and supporting structures
The lingual inclination of the mandibular buccal segments is evident. Abnormal perioral muscle function allows the tongue to drop and tips the maxillary buccal segments lingually. Mandibular width is seldom affected, however.
Palatal and lingual Incisor wires are anchored in the embrasures mesial to the permanent first molars and first premolars or deciduous first molars if present.
FR II
The shield extends to the depths of the vestibule, exerting pressure on tissue attachments to the alveolar bone.
In addition to relieving the external pressure, particularly when it is strongest (deglutition), the shields exert an indirect tension on periosteum overlying the bone.
