The United Way`s mission is to help Families Break the cycle oI poverty through
Iinancial stability. The United Way provides emergency assistance Ior those in need oI heat,
housing, Iood, and move out oI shelters and obtain job skills. This organization`s goal is to
strengthen Iamily with Iinancial education and services. The United Way believes when youth
win, we all win. Over 50 oI the youth in Massachusetts Ieel they do not have an adult they can
turn to with their problems. This organization is looking to the community to create continuing
support and opportunity so that youth will stay in school, graduate to better their Iuture. The
United Way Iocuses on ensuring that young children enter school healthy and ready to learn.

liIe. Research shows that every dollar spent on quality early intervention has long term aIIects.
The United Way oI Massachusetts is a not Ior proIit organization that distributes resources to the
human service needs in Eastern Massachusetts and the seacoast region oI New Hampshire and
southern Maine. UWMB Iunds are primarily Irom contributions Irom businesses and individuals
in the one hundred and thirty Iour towns and cities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and
Maine. UWMB is exempt Irom Iederal income tax under section 501 oI the Internal Revenue
Code.

The United Way project supports aIIordable housing, employment, and Iinancial
education that are essential elements to achieve Iinancial stability. For the most part this
organization seeks support and tools Ior the Iollowing:
Housing search and retention services Ior homeless and at-risk Iamilies
AIIordable housing development and preservation
$kills training and job placement Ior low to moderate income individuals
Financial education and counseling services (including access to beneIits and
entitlements).

The United Way oI Massachusetts will track success by the number oI individuals who obtained
legal status to secure work/work authorization, who obtained employment, retained employment
and achieve job advancement.

The United Way oI Massachusetts year`s end on June 30, 2009 UWG$ had total assets oI
$3,600,955, total net assets oI $2,181,598 and total revenue oI $2,966,984. UWG$ accounted Ior
donor contributions and pledges receivable as unrestricted. UWMB has adopted endowment
investment and spending policies that attempt to provide a predictable stream oI Iunding to
programs supported by its endowment while seeking to maintain the purchasing power oI
endowment assets. Assets oI the Fund are invested to ensure that principal is preserved and
enhanced over time, both in real and nominal terms. The nominal rate oI return objective Ior the
Fund is 8, net oI Iees. Additionally, total return should exceed the rate oI inIlation, as measured
by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) by 4 per year, net oI Iees. Comparative perIormance
statistics are used to evaluate investment results Ior each investment manager. This organization
targets a diversiIied asset allocation among investment managers in order to achieve an optimal
balance between risk and return. Calculations are perIormed Ior individual endowment Iunds at a
rate oI 5 oI the rolling three-year average oI total market value oI invested Iunds, determined
quarterly. This rate is reviewed on an annual basis. Distributions oI endowment Iunds with
restricted use are made in accordance with the terms oI giIt instruments. Distributions oI these
Iunds and unrestricted Iunds shall be withdrawals Irom the Endowment Fund beyond the 5
distribution rate may be made in special circumstances as the Board oI Directors may determine,
subject, however, to the requirements oI donor-imposed restrictions on particular Iunds and the

limitations in Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 180A on the use oI appreciation on
institutional Iunds.

Companies and people within the community oIten support and give to organizations
such as The United Way to help them achieve their goals and help their community thrive.
Hundreds oI organizations support The United Way by running Iund raiser, volunteering their
time to projects and some workplaces will match donations Ior their employee`s iI they donate
just a Iew dollars a week through payroll deduction. The United Way`s overhead was at 16 the
goal now is to achieve an overhead oI 12.This organization`s administrative costs are still the
lowest in the community and below the Better Business guidelines. Last year over 371,000 oI
our neighbors were supported by their local United Way.
