Group Discussion Handout

"The soul of India lives in its villages," declared M. K. Gandhi at the beginning of
20th century. According to the 2001 Indian census, 74% of Indians live in 638,365
different villages. The size of these villages varies considerably. 236,004 Indian
villages have a population less than 500, while 3,976 villages have a population
of 10,000+. Most villages have their own temple, mosque or church depending
on the local religious following.

Nagoor is one such village has 500 families with main stay of agriculture.
It is located down south of India in Tanjore district.
This village has no electricity and people use no LGP and still use fire wood and
kerosene for cooking. .Most of them live in huts with low infrastructure.
Class seventh students explore possibilities to empower the village by providing
light and fuel for low cost. They are divided into five groups and work on
possible solution to provide low cost fuel.

Question for group discussion –Fuel for forever –Non conventional energy for
empowerment of village

• How do we empower the village with fuel, electricity and Gas?

• How do we sustain the development and lead them to the future?
• Is it possible and feasible to generate our own energy?

Each Group has to post their discussion in the class-wiki for large discussion
Class will discuss the pros and cons of each non conventional model and do a
feasible study to zero in one model that suits the village.

Students are free to post any queries and interested students can respond the
queries.
