Hoek and
Diederichs, 2006
Based on an analysis of a data set from
China and Taiwan, a new relationship
between the rock mass deformation
modulus E
rm
and GSI is proposed. This is
based on a sigmoid function and two
forms of the relationship are presented.
The simplified equation depends on GSI
and D only and it should be used with
caution, only when no information in the
intact rock properties are available. The
more comprehensive equation includes the
intact rock modulus. When laboratory data
for the modulus are not available a means
of estimating this modulus from the intact
rock strength o
ci
is given, based on a
modulus reduction factor MR.
