100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE

Character: Ursula Iguaran Ursula Iguaran, one of the most important characters in the novel 100 Years of Solitude, represents a strong willed, loyal and yet she is also caring and loving individual. As a member of the Buendia family, Ursula is always looking after the well being of her family, as at one point she shouts at her husband If you have to go crazy, please go crazy all by yourself put your gypsy ideas into the heads of the children. She is a very strong and important member of her family as well as in the community that she lives in. Her influence over the community is quite visible, as by the time the gypsies had returned, Ursula had turned the whole population of the village against them. Ursula is also a very selfless and very caring woman. Her ability to accept the daughter of strangers and raise her as her own shows her compassion and love extends from just in her family. Her adopted daughter, Rebecca, is immediately assimilated into the Buendia Family and is seen as a part of the Buenda Family. At one point in the novel, when Ursula discovered that Rebecca had been eating mud, Ursula gave her Rhubarb to eat and she also added whipping to the treatment. In addition to be loving and strong willed, Ursula is also loyal and devoted to her husband and kids. Even though she does not share her husbands beliefs, she is willing to accept it somewhat in order to support her husband and his beliefs. One aspect Ursula did not like was her husbands belief in the gypsies. At one point, in an attempt to help her husband, even though she was not able to catch up with the gypsies, she had found the route that her husband had been unable to discover in his frustrated search for the great inventions. This also illustrated her determination to get something done for the sake of someone she loved, her husband, as her capacity for work was the same as her husband. In conclusion, I believe that Ursula is loyal, loving, compassionate, strong-willed and devoted and above all, she can be seen as an inspiration to other women.
