Conjunctions
The Conjunctions is also a connector. It connects by coordinating, correlating or subordinating one grammatical element or another. Thus, it is classified into coordinate, correlative, and subordinate.
Coordinate Conjunction
connects words, phrases or clauses of equal rank.
The kinds of coordinate conjunctions are determined by the relationship between the two coordinating elements, such as the following:
1. Addition indicates that what follows is supplementary to what precedes. Besides also likewise And moreover as well as Ex. They sang, danced, and rolled the whole night long. She is an excellent cook besides a good teacher.
2. Contrast introduces an idea that what follows in some ways conflicts or contrast with that has been started before. But nevertheless however
Ex.
He can sing, but he cant dance. I waited for you for long hours; however, you didnt show up.
Ex. Will she be present or will she be absent? You must come early; otherwise, you will be left behind.
Ex.
He studied very hard; hence, he got good mark. People denuded the mountains; consequently, they suffer from floods.
Correlative conjunction
used in pairs and is meant to correlate grammatical elements of likewise equal rank. either --- or whether --- or rather --- than neither --- nor both --- and as --- as
Ex.
It doesnt matter whether you leave or you stay. I will get my pen from you either today or tomorrow.
Subordinate conjunction
subordinates one grammatical element to another. After as though as if If Where while since when As lest provided because
Ex. The colourful kite files as if it is a feather floating. He is snoring while sleeping.
