RE: Guarani Massacre 27 November 2011 To whom it may concern Our colleagues in the Brazilian Anthropology Association have

reported that on the morning of November 18th, gunmen hired by local plantation owners entered into an Kaiow Guarani encampment in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil. The gunmen murdered Nisio Gomes, a Kaiow political and religious leader, as well as an unnamed woman and child. Many other Kaiow were wounded, with the survivors dispersing into the surrounding bush. The planters employees had surrounded the Kaiow encampment since the 16th of November, and all accounts indicate that the gunmen are still in the area, hunting indigenous leaders. The executive committee of the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA) supports our colleagues in the Brazilian Anthropological Association (ABA) in their efforts to repudiate this violence and in calling for the Brazilian government to take swift and effective action. We ask that federal police be sent into the area in order to protect the Kaiow Guarani, find and arrest the murderers and bring them to trial. Sincerely yours,

Prof Thomas Reuter Chair: World Council Of Anthropological Association On behalf of the WCAA Executive Committee
