Tavurvur is an active volcano that lies near Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. It is a sub-vent oI the
Rabaul caldera

and lies on the eastern rim oI the larger Ieature. The volcano is most well
known Ior its devastating eruptions over Rabaul.
Mt Tavurvur is the most well known volcano in Rabaul caldera, and has erupted as recently in
January 2009.

Pyroclastic Ilows descend the south-eastern Ilank oI Mayon Volcano, Philippines. Maximum height oI the eruption
column was 15 km above sea level, and volcanic ash Iell within about 50 km toward the west. There were no
casualties Irom the 1984 eruption because more than 73,000 people evacuated the danger zones as recommended by
scientists oI the Philippine Institute oI Volcanology and Seismology.

Alert level 4 was maintained as the volcano remained restive through the month oI December,
prompting aIIected residents to spend Christmas and the New Year in evacuation centers.

December 25, sulIur dioxide emissions peaked at 8,993 tons per day.

PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum commented on the status oI the volcano, "You might think
it is taking a break but the volcano is still swelling."

On the next day December 29, a civil
aviation warning Ior the airspace near the summit was included in the volcano bulletins.

The
ejected volcanic material since the start oI the eruption was estimated to have been between 20
million to 23 million cubic meters oI rocks and volcanic debris, compared to 50 million to 60
million cubic meters in past eruptions.
