THE BATLE OF SAN ROMANO by PAOLO UCCELLO
REACTON PAPER

The Battle of San Romano, is a great master piece of a Florentine painter Paolo Uccello. This
painting of Paolo Uccello was composed of three panels each panel is 10 feet wide and 6
feet tall. t was completed in year 1483 and believed to be a commission from Lionardo Bartolini
Salimbeni, a wealthy banker. The panels represents the great war between the army of Siena
and the Florentine army. Currently, all three panels have been separated, each housed in a
museum in a different country , the first panel is in The National Gallery of London, the second is
in the Uffizi Gallery and the last is in Louvre (Paris).
This painting was interesting because of its massive scale. f we look closely at the first panel of
the painting we can see there Niccolo Mauruzi da Tolentino with bits of the broken shafts on the
ground. At the center panel Niccol Mauruzi da Tolentino unseats Bernardino della Ciarda and
in the last panel we can see The Counterattack of Michelotto da Cotignola.
n the story, they said that the top part of the painting is cut off and there was evidence showing
that the commissioned work was meant to be fitted onto the walls of Bartolinis house. They said
that the original version would have shown valleys in the distance and skies in the background.
