5-5 and 5-6 Solving Equations
5-5 and 5-6 Solving Equations
Equations are very tricky and can be thrown off balance very easily! Luck for you there is a simple way to make sure you do not harm the delicate balance of what we call the equation. x+3=12 x + 3 = 12 + -3 +-3 x = 9 9+3=12 Yes!! Step one: Decide where the variable is. (x) Step two: Decide what number you need to move. (3) Step three: What is the opposite of that number you need to move? (-3) Step four: Add that two both sides. Step five: Simplify. Step six: Plug your answer back in to see if it makes since!!
*Even though you may be able to solve some equations in your head, you must learn a general strategy to solve more complicated examples. Practice: Solve for the variable. 1) v +13 = 2 2) 4.3+ w = -1.5
4) 97 = 513+ t
5) d - 3.9 = 5.1
Solving x + a < b is done much the same way as before but the answer means something different.
r -16 < 5
r 16 < 5 + 16 +16 r < 21
Step one: Decide where the variable is. (r) Step two: Decide what number you need to move. (-16) Step three: What is the opposite of that number you need to move? (16) Step four: Add that two both sides. Step five: Simplify. Step six: Graph you answer on a number line!
1) x + 3.4 4
3 2) 4 -5.2 + y 4
3) n + 2.8 > 2
4 5
4) 7 t + -1
Homework: YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK AND SIMPLIFY ALL FRACTIONS!!!! In 1-8, solve for the variable. 1)
c + 34 = 72
2) -9.3+ g = 4.1
3)
3 2 +s = 4 4
4) h - 4.2 = -7.9
1 4 5) y + 5 = -2 5 7
3 6) w - = 0.6 5
7) r -12.1= -48
8) 4 + t +3 = 9
In 9-16, solve for the variable then graph the solution. 9) p + -3 < 5 10) q + -8 -6
1 1 11) h + -6 > -6 8 8
15)
6 3 + j>7 7
