State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Spill Hotline received the following report: Spill reported: Spill occurred: December 2, 2011 CROWLEY FOODS DIV. OF HP HOOD, LLC 2O700 NYS RTE 411 LaFargeville, Jefferson County Material spilled: Sodium Hydroxide, Sulfuric Acid and Nitric Acid Quantity as reported: 100 gallons Sodium Hydroxide/Caustic Acid(49%) and 300 gals. of mixed Sulfuric Acid(20%) & NitricAcid(10%) The spill number is 1110708. Two doublewall aboveground storage tanks were involved. Both were reported to have leaked their chemical product into the secondary containment of their respective tank. Plant personnel plan to pump product back into the original tanks, use the chemical up, then replace the tanks. No chemicals were released to the environment.
