'Respect by Biggie Smalls was a very detailed and meaningIul song; however, it is unable to
appeal to a broader range oI audience because oI its use oI vulgar language and slang. Older
individuals don`t want to hear anything about drugs, murdering, or sex; thereIore, they will most
likely turn oII the song beIore even hearing the message Biggie is trying to get across to his Ians.
Among other things, people also have problems understanding the slang used throughout the
song. For example, Biggie says, 'I wanna blow up, stack my dough up, so school I didn`t show
up, it I***ed my Ilow up, Mom said that I should grow up and check myselI beIore I wreck
myselI, disrespect myselI.. In this stanza Biggie is basically rapping about his aspirations to
become popular and rich. He plans to gain Iame and Iortune not through doing good deeds but
selling drugs and associating himselI with gangs, Ior he reIers to himselI as the ScarIace, King oI
New York which is a character inIamous Ior his association with drug and Iirearm smuggling.
To prevent some oI his audience Irom being conIused I have decided to re-create this particular
song into a collage oI pictures. The pictures I am going to include in the collage will be
somewhat set up according to how the lyrics in the song are organized. I will only incorporate
pictures to represent the main ideas oI the song to avoid clutter and conIusion. My overall goal is
to create a collage that can be easily understood by almost any age. I would like Ior a random
person to be able to walk up to my project and automatically understand what it is even iI they
have never heard Biggie`s song beIore. My idea to create a collage Ior this re-creation came Irom
a music video I saw a while back on television. The video itselI was very original, Ior I had
never seen anything like it beIore. The entire music video was a slide show oI pictures that
changed as the artist sang. I was able to understand what the artist was singing about without
actually hearing him. HopeIully I will be able to create something similar since I will not have
access to a video maker and I am unable to sing. Making a collage oI this particular song by
Biggie seemed pretty easy at Iirst but once I really started to get into it it became a lot more
diIIicult than I had anticipated. Finding the ideal pictures to go along with the lyrics was a
daunting task, even though I had the internet as a resource. While looking Ior pictures to add I
kept two things in my mind, relevance to the lyrics and creativity............

*Make sure you indent the beginning oI your paragraphs, and split everything you have written
into more than one paragraph. I think you have done a great job explaining the collage and how
you are going to make it. To make your paper longer, I think you should describe the pictures
that you put in the collage and which lines oI the song they relate to. You should also explain
how they relate and why they are a good representation. You can also change your paper so it
isn`t in Iirst person, which may also make your paper longer, and it will make it stronger and it
will sound better. You can also pick a place that you will put your collage, and you can explain
why you picked that place and why it would help you reach a larger audience than the song
does.*
