5- Percent Composition of Compounds

Objective: To learn to find the mass of an element in a given compound.
What do we mean by "percentage?
Just a fraction multiplied by 100
Specifically, it is a part of the whole
For example What are the parts of my
spray bottle for cleaning the board?
Lid, liquid inside and the bottle part (3
different parts)
What is the mass % of each of the
different parts?
First, need to know total of mass of object
(50 g)
Then, measure the mass of the individual
parts that make up the whole
Lid 5g, liquid 30g, bottle 15 g
Then, compare mass of each individual
part to the mass of the entire object
Mass % of the lid = 5g x 100
50g
= 10%
= lid makes up 10% of the total weight
Mass % of the liquid = 30g x 100
50g
= 60%
= liquid makes up 60% of the total wt.
Mass % of the bottle = 15g x 100
50 g
= 30 %
= bottle makes up 30% of the total wt.
Total should now equal 100%.
ow does this relate to chemistry?
Bottle represents a compound.
What do the lid, bottle and liquid (the individual
parts) represent?
The Elements
What does the total mass (50g) represent?
MOLAR MASS of a compound
Mass percent (sometimes called "weight percent) :
Mass % = mass of each element x 100
mass of compound
Let's try one together!
Determine mass % of each element in sulfuric
acid (

S0
4
)
Mass of

= 1.01 g x = .0 g
Mass of S = 3.07g
Mass of O
4
= 16.00 g x 4 = 64.00 g
Total Molar Mass is 98.09 g
.0g/ 98.09g x 100 = .0593 %
3.07g/98.09g x 100 = 3.6944 % S
64.00g/ 98.09g x 100 = 65.46 % O
Do they add up to 100%?
Practice makes perfect
Note- calculate molar mass first!
ndividual mass % values should total
100%.
