Direct

Object a noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or what receives the action of the verb
Verb

MUST be an action verb Cannot be part of prepositional phrase!

Examples
1.)

Did Bill hit a home run?

Question

who or what was hit? Answer = home run

2.)

She worked the clay with her hands. What is the verb? Who or what is receiving the action of the verb? Answer = clay

3.)

She worked with clay.

What

is the direct object? Answer = there is not one What is clay in this sentence? Answer = object of preposition

4.)

She was a sculptor.

What

is the verb? Answer = was What is the direct object? Answer = there is not one (was is a linking verb)
