Unbricking Guide Samsung Captivate Preamble: Inside every Galaxy S phone is the FSA9480 USB switch.

. What it does is allow the transmission of multiple data types (audio / UART / OTG) over a single USB connection. This is how the Galaxy S dock works, for example. With the USB switch, factory boot mode can be toggled even if the phone is bricked. Theoretically, it should be able to revive most dead devices even if the 3 button combo does not work. This guide will show you how to make a jig that toggles factory boot mode. Caution: I cannot be responsible for any damages that happen. You undertake all responsibility. It should take someone about hour to complete these steps. More reading: www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/FS/FSA9280A.pdf Link to a similar Fairchild chip (the one in the SGS is under a NDA.)

How-to: Materials needed: 301k resistor micro USB plug or, breakout board from sparkfun http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=10031 soldering supplies (solder, iron)

Estimated total cost: $3-5 for the components, soldering supplies are around $10 total. Notes on materials: Improvise a 301k resistor by adding resistors to total up to 301k. E.g 3 x 100k in series + 1k

You need to be within 1% of the total resistance I've had luck with 302k and 303k, but YMMV. One of the made-for-Blackberry cables I hacked apart had no 4th pin so beware.

Howto: 1. Find pins 4 and 5 on the mUSB connector.

2. Solder the resistor across pins 4 and 5.

Schematic

I prototyped mine on a breadboard, using several resistors in series (the stuff on the top is from an old project.)

3. Turn off your phone, remove SIM, microSD, battery. 4. Insert battery. 5. Insert jig. The download mode screen should come up within a few seconds. 6. Use ODIN to return to a stable version ROM. 7. Save the jig! You might need it in the future.

Notes, recommendations, corrections all welcome. -Merlin. Sources: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756988&page=24
