Directions: Read each problem carefully, and solve to the best of your ability. As always, SHOW YOUR WORK!, including the equation(s) you use. Clearly indicate your answers, and be sure to INCLUDE PROPER UNITS!! You may want to use a separate sheet of paper. 1. When a parachutist jumps out of an airplane, he achieves a maximum terminal velocity equal to 200 km/hr. Assume that the parachutist starts from rest, and that he falls freely until reaching terminal velocity. Determine: a. the time required to achieve this velocity; b. the distance the parachutist will fall in achieving this velocity.

2. On a rainy day, raindrops fall from clouds that are 1.8 km above the Earths surface. Assuming the raindrops start from rest, and that they are not affected by air resistance, with what velocity would a raindrop reach the ground? Do you think it would be safe to walk outdoors during a rainstorm if air resistance was not a factor?

3. The observation deck of the Empire State Building is approximately 320 meters above street level. Assume an observer were to drop a penny down to the sidewalk below. Ignoring air resistance, determine: a. the final velocity of the penny when it reaches the sidewalk; b. the time taken for the penny to fall to the ground.

4. ** Standing on the edge of a 20 m high cliff, a curious physics student takes a stone and tosses it vertically upwards with an initial velocity v0y. In a certain amount of time t, the stone returns to its initial vertical position; it takes a total time 2t for the stone to land on the ground below the edge of the cliff. Please determine v0y.
