Chapter I

Objectives A. General Objectives After establishing a nurse-patient relationship, through physical assessment, providing care to the client and study of the clients condition, students will gain knowledge, develop skills and enhance attitude through the utilization of the nursing process on the care and management of the patient with hyperbilirubinemia. B. Specific Objectives On completion of this case study, the student will be able to:
1. Understand what hyperbilirubinemia is.

2. Trace the pathophysiology of the disease. 3. Review the anatomy and physiology of the parts involved. 4. To build trusting relationship with both the patient and significant others. 5. Determine the health status of the patient through: a. History of present illness b. Past medical history c. Family health history d. Physical examination 6. Utilize skills in performing physical examination to the patient. 7. Analyze laboratory results and correlate it with patients present condition. 8. Familiarize self to some medical and diagnostic procedures related to the patients present condition. 9. Determine the relevance of the drugs or medications to the patient. 10. Formulate nursing diagnosis and provide necessary nursing management and interventions.

11. Render quality nursing care through implementation of nursing care plan and medical management. 12. Provide continuity of care by giving health teachings not only to the patient but also to the significant others.
