*Friday, December 19th will be our classroom holiday party. The party will take place from 8:45-9:30 in our classroom. Thank you so much to all of the parent volunteers for all of their work getting the party organized! *Though there will not be any homework assigned over winter break I would encourage you to take this time to do a lot of December 12th , 2011 reading with your child over break. On the back of this newsletter is a fun activity to work on reading fluency that you can Dates to Remember: complete with your child over break. They can turn this in December 16th after winter break to me for a SPOT ticket for respecting self and teaching over Classroom Holiday Party at break. I will also encourage them to continue completing their reading log over break. In addition students can check out the Multiplication Rap CD to listen to and 8:45 am practice their facts over winter break. This week we will begin working on our 4s. What were Learning This Week...


Language Arts: This week we will read the story Cricket in Times Square from
our reading series. Students will be working on using clues from the text along with their own connections to make a deeper meaning of the story by writing an extended response answer to a given question. We will also continue to focus on identifying the main idea and important details in reading passages. During our word study time we will be working identifying base words, prefixes and suffixes in words. In writing we will be working on our new fiction writing unit this week. Students are currently working on getting ideas for writing and writing their first draft.

Math: This week in math we will work on identifying equivalent decimals, as well as
comparing and ordering decimals. We will also review place value concepts and review writing numbers in standard, written, and expanded form to the millions as well as decimals to the hundredths place.

Science/Social Studies: In social studies students will finish up our unit on the Southwest. Students will be
taking a quiz over the states and capitals of the Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest on Thursday of this week. When we return from winter break we will begin a new and exciting unit on chemistry.
