Abstract This study provides a general review of the main researches developed on the differentiation of self, and a corpus of data which show, at a first descriptive and inferential level, the correlation between the components of this important psychological construct and the global level of psychological adjustment and wellbeing evaluated through the presence of psychopathological symptoms, the self-esteem entity and the dysfunctional elements of the adult attachment prototypes, in a sample of 25 adult subjects supported by a context of psychological counselling and psychotherapy. Data yielded by this research supply with a unique and original clinical contribution the test of Bowen theory assumptions, confirming the centrality and the transversal importance of the Differentiation of Self concept within the psychotherapy and psychological counselling.The results also show that the differentiation of self construct represents an important component of the adult individual global Self, as its developmental deficits correlate with psychological distress reflected by a complex of psychopathological symptoms, a low self-esteem and the structuration of adult attachment insecure internal working models.
