How to Learn Piano - How To Play Keyboard

The piano is a musical instrument that has evolved from keyboard instruments such as the clavichord and harpsichord. Pressing keys of a keyboard in such instruments causes strings to be either struck or plucked, which creates musical sounds. The piano is ideal for solo performances, ensembles, chamber music and accompaniment.

Learn how to read music notes by identifying them on sheet music. Use the common acronyms "Every Good Boy Does Fine" and "FACE" to remember the position of the notes on the treble clef and "Great Big Dogs Fight Animals" and "All Cows Eat Grass" for those on the bass clef.

Identify each note on the piano keyboard. Start by finding middle "C," which is located in the middle of the keys. It is white and located to the left of a set of two black keys. Keys "A" and "B" are the white keys located to the left of "C," and keys "D" through "G" are the white keys located to the right of "C." All notes can be located by finding the "C's."

Locate the notes of the treble (the high-pitched notes) and bass (the low-pitched notes) clefs on the keyboard by first finding the middle "C," which marks the dividing line between the two extremes. All keys to the right of middle "C" are considered the treble clef, and all those to the left of middle "C" are considered the bass clef.

Know how to identify flats and sharps---flats and sharps are the black keys. Flats are left of a note, and sharps are right of a note. For instance, "F" sharp is found by first locating an "F," and then referring to the black key directly to the right of the "F." That key is "F" sharp. To find a flat, simply locate a key, and refer to the black key directly to the left of it.

Learn the finger positions. Each thumb begins on a "C" for both the treble and bass clefs, and each finger follows accordingly from there. For instance, the fingers of the right hand would begin by placing the thumb on "C," the next finger on "D," the next on "E," the next on "F" and then the last on "G." The same would dictate for the left hand---begin by positioning the thumb, and let the rest of the fingers follow suit.
