1) Jeanne de Montfort defended her lands by ensuring the loyalty of her people.

She rode from town to town rallying support for the heir, her three-year old son John. She offered riches for support and provided for her people, thus building a following. 2) In the Middle Ages, women risked their lives defending their property. Their land was their familys source of wealth and therefore they had to protect it. 3) As women were expected to defend their homes, they were also seen as being able to handle such a job physically and mentally. I think this is a step forward. Obviously anyone, male or female, with a job like that would feel pressured.
