Robert Arnold 16 November 2011 Microtheme: Dont Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight Alexandra Fuller recollects her African childhood in the New York Times Bestseller entitled Dont Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight. Her childhood was anything but normal, but she still manages to captivate her audience with humor and sensitivity. Fuller and her family struggled with several losses throughout the novel, but one that seemed to reoccur was the loss of her siblings. The loss of Bobo, Adrian, and Olivia tremendously affected her family especially her mother. Alexandras mother resorted to drinking as a method to cope with the loss of her children, which ultimately resulted in a nervous breakdown. Fuller remembers how her mothers story of her brothers death would change depending on what her mother was drinking. On many occasions her mother would talk to her about Adrian by saying, Mum tells me about Adrian. I understand, through the power of her emotion, her tears, the way she is dissolving like soap left too long in the bath, but this has truly been the greatest tragedy of our lives. Fuller watched her mother crumble under the tragedies of her siblings, however she learned to appreciate the value of life and what it means to be alive. After reading Fullers memoir, I was inspired by her story and how it shaped her life and influenced her abilities as an incredible author.
