Stetement of the Problem There has been a lot of interest in Voic over IP (Voip) recenty.

This technology makes cast effective telecommunication possible. A voip PBX has been developed at Rhodes University. It is basesd a number of open source component, the major one being Asterisk. The channel-based architecture of Asterisk provide a mean to effectivity bridge the trasport of voice between various protocols such as H.23, Sip (both protocols used for voip) and PSTN ( public Services telephone Network) via ISDN. In principle the architecture should allaw the transport of video with relative ease. Practically, this has not been investigatted. The aim of this project is to investigate the voice trasmission over the chennel to get an idea of the chennels structure. From this information, an implamentation will be built wich make the trasport of video data possible. This will provide video conferencing capabilties.once completed I would have attained a deep understading of how the chennel architecture operates, its limitation and the various ot other possibilities. I will also be in a position to suggest ways in which it may be improved in the future and open avenus for futher research. This will be intersting and fulfilling, and generate a good understanding of the undrlying structure in VOIP, wich will be evaluable for futher research in the area, and applicaion to industry where this is fast becoming a standerd.
