Five common patterns for English sentences A. subject + verb (vi) [vi = intransitive verb e.g.

. go, come, run, sleep, sit, walk, stand, fly, light, dance, laugh, cry, arrive, etc.]

Examples: - John laughed. - John is running.

- I cant walk. - Jack smokes. - Mary is crying. - It rained. - The letter has arrived. - He works. - Witoon is walking.

direct object (DO)

[vt = transitive verb e.g.


give, bring, write, speak, hit, kick, see, look at, order, open, close, wash, clean, take, buy, watch, attack, enjoy, etc.]

Examples: - I love you. - Nobody answers my question.

- Most children like candy. - She has dark hair. My father bought a car. - Mary cooked the apple. - He watched a television. - I want some money.

sound, taste, remain Examples: - The teacher seemed angry. - He is an engineer. - John gets tired. - I am fat. - I am a student.

- Mary appears serious. - The cake tastes good. - The train is slow. D. subject + verb (vi) + adverbial Adverbial = a prepositional phrase OR an adverb

Examples: - I was in my bedroom. - My house is in Uttaradit. - The sun rises in the east. - I live with my parents. - The doctor was at the hospital. - The party is downstairs.

(IO) + direct object (DO) Examples: - I bought my daughter a dress. - My friend gives me a wrist watch. - I gave her some flowers. - I send her some gifts.

- The traveler sent his friend a photograph. - John buys Dave and me an ice cream. Each year we give our next -door neighbors some cookies.
