TRANSFORMS
Signal - Any quantity measurable through time or over space. Transforms - For extracting information. eg. Fourier transform

FOURIER TRANSFORM
Hidden information in the frequency component. To find frequency content : Fourier Transform

FT of time domain signal gives frequency amplitude representation of that signal amplitude frequency

FT gives frequency information of the signal but not when in time these frequency components exist. FT of a stationary signal

NON-STATIONARY SIGNALS

Frequency constantly changes in time ("chirp" signal. )

WAVELET TRANSFORM
It

provides time frequency representation. It provides variable resolution as follows: At high frequency, wavelet transform gives good time resolution and poor frequency resolution At low frequency, wavelet transform gives good frequency resolution and poor time resolution.

Pass the time domain signal through various High pass and low pass filters, which filter out either HF or LF portion (decomposition). This procedure is repeated and a bunch of signals representing the same signal is obtained. These signals corresponds to different frequency bands.
