When a ductile material has gradually increase stress applied to it, it behave elastically up to a limiting stress.

Beyond that plastic deformation occurs. In a case of tensile stress, this takes the form of necking. As the stress is increassed, the cross-sectional area is furhter reduced until at some stage fracture occurs. The surfaces of the fractures materials are dull. Ductile materials are materials that will bend or distort without breaking when impacted.
