EARLY OTTOMAN ARCHITECTURE 1300-1453


Three types of mosques: single domed, hypostyle and T plan. Single domed: common in western Anatolia, single cube covered with dome, entrance through three-bay portico, examples: Green Mosque in Iznik (1391), Bayezid Mosque in Mudurnu (1382) Hypostyle: repetition of smaller units, examples: Great Mosque of Bursa (1400), Old Mosque (1413) and Three Serefe Mosque in Edirne (1447) T plan: combination of mosque + dervish lodges, plan shape resembles T, similer to closed-court madrasa, examples: Murad I Mosque near Bursa (1385), Green Mosque of Mehmed I in Bursa (1419)

IZNIK and BURSA


The first buildings in truly original Ottoman style were built in Iznik and Bursa.

BUILDING TECHNIQUES AND MATERIAL (EARLY OTTOMAN)


Main building element: thin suqare brick Arches, vaults and domes are made of brick and covered with terracotta roof-tiles Walls are constructed of 2-3 courses of brick alternating with one course of stone (typical Byzantine influence) Important monuments often made of ashlar (finely cut) stone and brick domes were covered with lead. Decoration: re-use of Byzantine or Roman capitals, motifs, Turkish triangles, muqarnas, marble and glazed tile decorations
