Language families and branches

Lidia Escalona Vidal

What is a language family?

A language family is a group of languages related by a common ancestor, called the proto-language of that family of language families is based on the assumption that over time languages gradually diverge into dialects and then into new languages.

The most widely studied language family in the world is the Indo-European. There are a number of reasons for this: These languages are official or co-official in many countries and are important in academic, technical and world organisations. Examples: English, Spanish, French, German, Russian.

The Indo-European Family is divided into twelve branches, ten of which contain existing languages. I will describe each of these branches separately.
