Topic: waves intro

Performance objectives: SWBAT identify the similarities and differences between transverse and longitudinal waves. Do Now: Projectile A is launched horizontally at a speed of 5 m/s from the top of a cliff and strikes a level surface below 3 seconds later. Projectile B is launched horizontally at a speed of 20 m/s from the same spot. 1) How long does it take projectile B to hit the ground? 2) Approximately how high is the cliff? Motivation: slinky with cloth attached. Transverse wave: what moved across the spring? Aim: How do waves transmit whatever it is that they transmit? (Pivotal) Questions: What moved across the spring? Notes: Waves Disturbances that transmit ENERGY through a MEDIUM (material). Pulse A single disturbance. Have students replicate a wave in a baseball stadium. How are a "wave" at a baseball stadium and a "wave" of people shoving each other similar and different? How is this slinky wave different from the first? How are the individual particles moving in a transverse/longitudinal wave? Have 5 or 6 volunteers get up and do a football wave. Domino effect: person one hits person two and bounces off, then person two hits person three and bounces off, etc. Show longitudinal slinky wave Baseball wave: transverse wave: particles move perpendicular to wave velocity Football wave: longitudinal wave: particles move parallel to wave velocity
