The study aims to produce low-priced, high-quality candles using used cooking oil. Cooking oil is a common object in Filipino households. This is often discarded, causing pollution in sewage systems.

The researchers aim to find a good use for used cooking oil which, if disposed improperly, will lead to clogs in our drainage systems. They also aim to use this recycled cooking oil to produce better, and longer-lasting candles. Lastly, the researchers would like to teach the children of the world to make environment-friendly candles.

If the amount of used cooking oil affects the longevity of a lit candle, then the increase in the amount of cooking oil will result to the decrease in the longevity of a lit candle.

450 grams of Paraffin Wax 30 inches of string 50 mL of used cooking oil 1 3 liter pot 1 Stove 1 Candle mold 1 ruler 1 box of matches OR 1 lighter 1 pair of scissors

Step 1 Melt 450 grams of Paraffin Wax using the 3L pot and the stove. Step 2 Cut the 30 string into 10 pieces using the pair of scissors. (3 each)

Step 3 Form 5 candles using 250 grams of melted wax, 5 pieces of the cut string, and the candle mold. Step 4 Form another 5 candles using 200 grams of melted wax, 5 pieces of the cut string, and the candle mold. Add 10 mL of cooking oil in each of the candles.

Step 5 Light the candles, and after 5 minutes, use the ruler to record how much of the wax has melted.

Heres our data

Relationship Possible sources of error : The addition of oil decreases the longevity 1.) Wrong calculation of of a candle. averages, 2.) Inexact burning times, and 3.) Inexact amount of wax poured per candle.

The researchers therefore conclude that used cooking oil does not improve the longevity of a candle, rather it decreases its effectiveness.
