ROLLER SKATE VERBS A certain category of verbs called "roller skate" verbs is created by some vowel changes in the root. These changes take place in the present indicative and in the preterit. There is no way of looking at an infinitive and knowing that it will be a verb of this type. Only some IR verbs are "roller skate" verbs, but they have to be "shoe" verbs in the present indicative and have to have the same vowel changes in the four forms of the present indicative. Teach students this concept using the following graphics. Review the shoe verbs first. The following verbs are "roller skate" verbs: preferir (ie, i) sentir (ie, i) divertirse (ie, i) mentir (ie, i) sugerir (i, i) servir (i, i) repetir (i, i) vestirse (i, i) desvestirse (i, i) sonrer (i, i) seguir (i, i) conseguir (i, i) pedir (i, i) elegir (i, i) corregir (i, i) despedir (i, i) rer (i, i) frer (i i) dormir (ue, u) morir (ue, u)

To get the "roller skate" verbs, you must first conjugate the verbs in the present indicative, using the first change indicated in parentheses. Draw lines around the changes to form a shoe. Start with the changes of E > IE, I. In the present tense these verbs change the first, second, and third person singular and plural in the root from E > IE. Follow the pattern below.
