Summary
This paper examines process of making and establishing of journalists as professional group in modern, informational society. Having in mind classical sociological difference between occupation and profession, this analysis examines such sharp dichotomy
and suggests continuum and journalist as group having characteristics of both instead.
Historically, journalists used to begin their occupational life as copyboys and learned their skill during everyday practice in editorial offices. So, it is not necessary to have
university degree to be a journalist even now. This is a crucial distinction from profession
stricto sensu such as physician and jurist deserving suitable academic degree. But journalists have one essential quality of such professions. The most important is vocational
ground comprised in ethical codex of professional associations of journalists containing
paragraphs of professional secret and protection of source of information. In spite of this
quality journalists are not liberal but dependent professional group they are not able to
establish direct communication with their public but only by means of private or public
media corporations.
Key words: journalists, profession, communication, ethical codex, media.
