Lake in the Hills Elementary School (847) 532-6932 *Family Education Night is this Thursday from 6:30-8:00p.m. There will be many Jennifer.Wallace@d300.org http://lithroom12.weebly.com fun reading and math activities for you to participate in with your child. Your child will receive one SPOT for each station they attend with you. There will also be many door prizes Volume 6, Issue 18 given for attendees. It should be a fun night to learn some neat activities that you can use at home to support your child. January 17th , 2012 I look forward to seeing you on Thursday night! Dates to Remember: *A reminder that the school fun fair is coming up on Satur January 16th day, January 28th from 2-6 p.m. Our class is collecting items to put together into a No School raffle basket. Out basket theme is snack attack. We will be accepting donations for the basket through Friday. January 19th Family Education Night

What were Learning This Week...


Language Arts: This week we will be reading the tall tale John Henry from
our reading series and completing a comprehension activity related to this story. Students will also be reviewing inferring during our reading time. We will also be learning about idioms, alliteration, and practicing prefixes and suffixes. In writing students have really been enjoying our current fiction writing unit. They have such great imaginations! They are using their imaginations to create pieces that include vivid details that allow the reader to see, feel, hear, taste, and touch what they are writing about.

6:30-8:00 p.m.

Math: In math we will begin a new two week unit on algebra concepts. Students will work on writing and evaluating expressions with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division this week. They will need to solve different equations with variables in them and we will be working on solving equations using the order of operations. We will continue to work on our 8s for our multiplication facts. Math rap CDs and workbooks with lyrics are available for check out in the library. If you are interested in having your child check out a CD please complete the page on the back on this newsletter.

Science/Social Studies: We will continue our unit on chemistry this week. We will be focusing on solutions
and mixtures, we will also be reviewing the states of matter.
