Recent developments inclu de a device that uses small hollow fibers and the heart's own pumping power to oxygenate blood. More research, however, is req uired to see if this works efficiently enough to meet medical standards. It may be necessary for a person to receive artificial lungs if a donor lung can 't be used for any reason.
