The combustion in a ci engine is considered to be taking place in four stages,

These are 1. ignition delay period 2. Period of rapid combustion 3. Period of controlled combustion 4. period of after burning

Ignition Delay Period

The ignition delay period is also called the preparing phase during which some fuel has been admitted but not yet ignited. This period is counted from the start of injection to the point where the pressure time curve separates from the motoring curve The ignition delay period can be devided into two parts 1) physical delay- it is the delay time b/w beginning of injection and the attainment of chemical reaction. 2) chemical delay- during this process reaction starts throughly and then accelaration until intlammation or ignition takes place.

Stages Of Combustion (PCurve)

Four Stages Of Combustion In CI Engines

Period Of Rapid Combustion

Also known as uncontrolled combustion. It is the phase in which temperature rise is rapid.

Period Of Controlled Combustion

The rapid combustion period is followed by the third stage, known as controlled combustion. The temp. and pressure can be controlled in this stage.

Period Of After Burning

After Burning heat release may proceed at alower rate well into the expansion stroke (no additional fuel injected during thisphase). Combustion of any unburned liquid fuel and soot is responsible for this
