Regarding the Neolithic sling bullets from Dispilio

The article handles the presence and spread
of the sling in the course of time and space. The
use of the sling is recorded from prehistoric times
since nowadays throughout the whole world. Although it was irst used as a hunting tool in the
hands of Neolithic people, as time went by the
sling became a very powerful weapon of antiquity. Since the slings were made of organic materials
and therefore can be rarely preserved, their presence is witnessed only by the clay and stone sling
bullets during the Neolithic.
Sling bullets are traced in nearly every Neolithic site in Greece. Most of the times they are gathered inside the house and near the hearth, pos-

sibly to be heated slowly close to a burning ire.

The analysis of Dispilio material has come to similar conclusions. Still, why do the Neolithic people
seem to prefer clay over stone sling bullets? It is
extremely possible that the mass quantity of these
artifacts lay beyond the limits of each settlement.
As a result it appears that we have in our hands
only pieces of a greater puzzle, yet to be solved.
Although the sling is considered mainly as a
hunting tool during the Neolithic, certain scholars
argue that it could have also been used as a weapon in limited or extended conlicts among Neolithic people. Such kind of use, though not completely
veriied, cannot be totally excluded.
