Ironically despite being in a profession which entertains people, the sex workers are

hounded, harassed and humiliated by every other agency and group they deal with on
routine basis.
Right from the traffickers who lure them into sex trade on pretext of marriage, job and
good life to the pimps who solicit customers for them in the corridor to the brothel
owners and senior prostitutes (called nayikas) who control them to the vendors who visit
the brothels to sell fruits, dry fruits, vegetables, eatables, cloths, cosmetics etc, everybody
gets a pie from their hard-earned money leaving them hardly with anything at the end of
the day.
Although a woman sex worker, according to Iqbal Ahmad, owner of a brothel and activist
with the BPUS, earns anything between Rs.200 to Rs.1000 for a session from a customer,
more often than not, she gets to retain only a meager percentage of it.
And if she happens to be young in the profession then there is every likelihood that she
will not get anything out of it. The entire amount in that case is divided among senior
prostitutes, brothel owners, pimps and other stake holders.
A majority of the female sex workers are trafficked into the sex trade either by their
lovers, relatives, acquaintances or the senior prostitutes who hail from their village or
community. The senior prostitutes bring them to Delhi with promise of good jobs and
force them into the trade.
