Common Problems after Import

Imported data will often need some editing to make it suitable for modeling. Examples:

Fault polygons missing Z-values.

Irregular 2D Grid that needs smoothing, and 2D grids or seismic interpretations containing spikes.

Make Polygons/ Points

Activate the Make/Edit polygon process. The Function tools will appear in the bar to the right

Polygons are stored in the Input pane

Create a new polygon or start on an active polygon Create new line within existing polygon Create new polygon and deactivate the old Close polygons (polygon must be active) Create new Points

Edit Polygons
Edit polygon points by using Edit/Add points icon. Edit polygon lines by using Edit line icon. 1. Select the point to edit and move it. 2. Create a new point by clicking on the line in a polygon, new point that appears.

Disconnect polygons by using the Disconnect Polygons icon.

To eliminate entire line segments when cutting polygons

Polygons Example of Calculations or Operations tab

Assign Z-values to fault polygon 1. Double-click on the object and go to Calculations tab. 2. Select surface to use in obtaining Z-values. Highlight in Explorer and click the blue arrow. 3. Click the Assign Z=A button. The operation is performed immediately.

4. A single Undo is available after the operation is completed.

Surfaces
Create surface - Make/Edit Surface process - Extract from 3D grid - Import as ASCII file 1. Settings dialog controls the visualization of the surface Can be modified interactively Operations or calculations. 2. Surfaces are used for: A) display B) volumes C) input to 3D grid Can be converted to points or polygons 1

Make/Edit Surface Process

Gridding lines, points, well tops, fault cuts, and 2D grids to produce 2D surfaces. 1. Double-click on Make/Edit Surface in the Processes pane (under Utilities). 2. Drop in data to be gridded 3. Name the new surface. By default the name will be based on the main input. 4 4. Geometry specification in Geometry tab. 5. Suggest settings from input; select type of input data. Use the settings suggested by Petrel, or change algorithm/ settings in the Algorithm tab. The Surface is stored in the Input pane after pressing Apply/Ok. 5 1 2 3

Make/Edit Surface Example of Workflow

Input Output Use the suggested algorithm or user defined. Apply

Drop in input data to be gridded (optional to use Boundary and closed faults).

Set Geometry (Automatic or user defined) Press Suggest settings from Input

Make/Edit Surface QC or Recover Settings

QC: Generate settings for how a Surface was made 1. Highlight a surface in the Input pane.

2. Open the Make/Edit Surface process and input the highlighted surface in the Result Surface field.

3. The settings used to create the surface (geometry, algorithm and input data) are automatically filled in.

Make/Edit Surface Clearing Settings

Warning: Parameters will be stored within the process, it is therefore necessary to remove parameters set previously: 1. Open the Make/Edit Surface process. 2. Highlight the Result Surface. 3. Press the Delete key. 4. Answer Yes to the question. 5. All the parameters are reset. 1 2 5

4 Clicking NO to the message will delete the output surface from the process dialog, but keep its settings to use for a new surface

Make/Edit Surface QC and Interactive Smooth (local)

The new surface may contain irregularities that needs to be smoothed: 1. Make sure the Make/Edit Surface process is active. 2. Activate the Smooth Area tool in the Function bar. 3. Select the area of influence in number of grid cells from the bottom toolbar (active when Smooth area is active). 4. Click on the surface area in 2D or 3D Display window (A) and see the change (B). 4B 2 1

4A

3 Note: This is a local smoothing option. To smooth the entire surface; go to the Operations tab for the surface.

Make/Edit Surface QC and Interactive Peak Remover

If a surface is made and it contains spikes, there is an alternate smoothing option, Peak Remover: 1. Make sure the Make/edit Surface process is active. 2. Activate the Peak Remover tool from Function bar. 3. Click directly on the base of the peak (A) and it will be immediately removed (B). 4. If the removal was incorrect, use the Undo button. B 3B Note: If editing dont improve the original surface then: A) Make a copy BEFORE you edit or B) right-click on the edited surface and select Regenerate. 4 1

Surface Calculator
To do operations on a surface or make new surfaces based on already made surfaces, use the Surface Calculator: 1. Right-click on a Surface and select Calculator. 2. Type in a new output name (here: New) (A). Use the Calculator options to create an algebraic expression (B). 3. Press Enter to execute (equation is stored in History field at top of calculator). 4. The new surface will be stored at the bottom of the Input pane. 4 2A 2B 1

General Intersection (Create)

General Intersection planes to QC data. How to create a General Intersection (GI) Plane: 1. Right-click on the Intersection folder in the Models pane or on any regular folder in the Input pane. 2. Select Insert General Intersection (A) and the toggle box in front of it automatically displays the plane (B). 1 2B

General Intersection (Move)

Two main methods for moving a General Intersection Plane: 1. Position the plane by using Manipulate Plane icon located in the Function bar; left mouse to move; left mouse+ctrl rotates it in any 3D direction around its axis.

2. Position the plane by using the Player at the bottom (active once GI is toggled on and is activated (bold)).

Blue button for visualization on plane

Player options like Step, Play and Stop. The number indicates step increment in project units

Align plane e.g. North/South or East /West

Cut in front of or behind plane

Snap intersection by 1 (parallel) 2 or 3 points

General Intersection (Display)

After generating and moving the GI plane it is time to display data on the plane: 1. Make sure the correct GI plane is active. 2. Click the Blue button (A) to activate all objects that can be displayed on the GI plane, the boxes will become blue (B)). 1 3. Click on the boxes in front of the objects you want to display on the plane. 2B

Note: When the Blue button is active, you cannot display any new objects in 3D. 3 2A

General Intersection (Display)

The GI plane has Style settings to control visualization of Input and Model data on the GI. Right-click on the GI and select Settings. Here the color, transparency, etc. is controlled from the Plane settings tab. However, some style options depend on how the GI was created, either from the Input pane or the Models pane: Input pane
