Shell $9m, 3 year partnership with "X-Prize" exploration prize
Friday, October 07, 2011 in Feature Articles Shell has agreed a 3 year sponsorship of the "X-Prize Exploration Prize Group", for $9m. The X-Prize Exploration Group is operated by the X Prize Foundation, a non profit organisation which aims to solve the world's big challenges by offering big prizes to people who develop the best new technology to do a specific task. The agreement follows Shell's sponsorship of an X Prize to develop a new oil clean-up technology. The specific prize Shell will sponsor over the next 3 years has not been disclosed, except that the foundation says that it could include exploration in space, oceans and land. The Exploration Prize Group has already offered $30m to a private company which can land a robot on the surface of the moon and travel over the lunar service, sending data back home, with sponsorship from Google. 'Shell has long been on the cutting edge of innovation, and we are proud to bring them into the X PRIZE family, supporting a prize group that advances innovation, exploration and tomorrow's discoveries,' said Peter Diamandis, Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation. 'We are closely aligned in our goals to motivate and inspire brilliant innovators from all disciplines to leverage their intellectual capital to explore new frontiers that could result in significant global achievements.' 'Continuous innovation and pioneering spirit is part of Shell's DNA. As a technology leader in energy, we constantly drive new solutions responding to the global energy challenge,' said Gerald Schotman, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, Innovation, Research and Development, Royal Dutch Shell. X Prize Foundation and Shell have also launched a video competition, challenging the public to create a video challenging people how to explore.
