Tall Buildings Initiative: Preliminary Design Ron Klemencic, S.E. Magnusson Klemencic Associates Inc.

The growing body of experience resulting from the design of tall buildings using Performance-Based Design (PBD) procedures provides valuable insight that can be used to guide the preliminary design of new projects. An overview of some of the more important issues to be considered will be presented enabling better performing buildings. Some of the topics will include: System Configuration Structural Performance Hierarchy Wind Engineering Dynamic Performance and the Importance of Higher Modes Damping Shear Demands Evaluation of Building Deformations Diaphragm Demands Non-participating Elements Foundations Examples from specific buildings will be provided to highlight some of the potential pitfalls which can result if these issues, and others, are not thoughtfully considered early in the design process.
