UPLB SELES hosts UPCAT review

As an academic organization that promotes service, academic excellence, and leadership while preparing its members to be of service to the society through Electrical Engineering, the UPLB Society of Electrical Engineering Students (UPLB SELES) had its 3-day University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) Review last July 16, 23 and 30 at the Immaculate Concepcion Academy, Dasmarias, Cavite. This is an annual activity of the organization and was led this year by the Academic Committee Head, Raymond Joseph Marqueses. Day one focused on Mathematics, day two focused on Science and day 3 focused on English. Also, during the last day, a simulation exam for the three subjects was given to the students to assess what they have learned for the 3day session. The results of the exam was bared on the same day and the topnotchers were given rewards. An alumus of ICA, Manuel Luigi Niere (Membership and Discipline Committee Head of UPLB SELES) gave a little inspirational talk to his co-alma maters. For the closing remarks, Marqueses gave the students his tips before and after taking the UPCAT. Lucilyn S. Niere Ma. Ed. (Principal of ICA West Campus) was very thankful to the organization and was hopeful that the students were inspired from what they have learned for three days and pass the UPCAT. UPLB SELES was also thankful to ICAs School Director, Celia S. Rasing Ma. Ed., for allowing the organization to conduct the UPCAT review at their school. The UPCAT is scheduled on August 6-7 at all selected testing centers nationwide.

Fourth year students of Immaculate Concepcion Academy join, together with the representatives from UPLB SELES, in a group shot during the last day of UPCAT Review, July 30.

EE Dept. holds elimination for IIEE quizzers
On September 2011, the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE) will conduct their annual Regional Student Conference that includes the Regional Quiz Show (RQS) covering EE, ESAS and Math; and the Regional Math Wizard (RMW). In line with this, the UPLB Department of Electrical Engineering conducted an elimination round for aspiring quizzers last July 4 at the EE auditorium. Those who participated were EE students who are in their sophomore to senior years. The process of elimination was like the quiz contest proper wherein the questions shall be given verbally to the participants and their answers were written on a small board. The first half of the selection was for the next RQS quizzers and then later was for RMW quizzers. Prof. Roderick Catriz and Engr. Erickson Poja prepared the questions for RQS and RMW, respectively. The top 5 scorers for each set of elimination were all from UPLB SELES. For the RQS, the quizzers are the following: Andreo Lozada II, Raymond Joseph Marqueses, Jeffrey Calderon, Ryan Jose Sumaya and Arvin Bryan Polo; and for the RMW, the quizzers consist of the following: Neil Ryan Asor, Fidel Casimiro Jr., Julius Cesar Cunanan, Nahdiya Zaheer Betonio, and Michael Joseph Samson.

All the crap was worth it, finally its done. Something weve wholeheartedly brought upon ourselves to ride UPLB in a crazy way, to experience college in a different perspective, to be a part of an even crazier family, to have friends closer than your real siblings, to be a better person, to have a batch batchmates you know will be there hawak kamay no matter what, to be SELES; to love SELES. Experiencing the process of joining SELES with my batch raised the fun exponentially. Unlike our ancestor, the real Mr. Transformer, Transmitter made my joining SELES a heck of a joy ride I think I wont forget this hype even if I try. Every time I walk towards EE, I gotta tell my heart pumps twice as harder as nervousness vibrates from my innards to my fingertips. Nonetheless, the presence of my batchmates put me a bit at ease, nakakagaan ng loob. Weve had our ups and downs, our lefts and rights, our thick and thin. Weve been through a lot of tears, of laughters, of chasing kuya Igi, of waking up together to meet kuya Davis, of chicken fillets and Mcdo takeouts, of struggles, of fights, of battles among too-many-to-mention others. Without further ado ladies and gentlemen, and gentleladies and everybody else, the batch that was presented with 17 human beings, the batch that finished as complete 17 still human beings, but with deeper friendship, the Batch Transmitter.
Ram Ramilo. Hes real name is Allan, he gets his nickname from his surname though, his other supposed nickname was Milo. Ram, Milo :D. Ram, from Quezon, who lives with Budz at Avokado House here at LB, is a happy quiet guy, who looks like hes always picked on. Frog fact: He becomes a gymnast at night; he usually takes in strange positions- reaching for his toes, nakabaluktot, kneeling with his arms and feet folded. I wonder why. Lee Gonzales. Im usually hard to define, but generally Im a serious guy but I still have my wacky side. I generalize myself as a Jack of all trades, since I can do lots of stuffs sing, dance, draw, write, speak publicly, cook, you name it. Bloc representative of W1. Im a born-again Christian, and thats me. Frog fact: I dont patronize the Local entertainment industry, corny e. I dont know any OPM songs. Jhones Race (pronunciation: Juh-Howns). Jhones is a nice guy, valedictorian- high school; Hes nice, organized, but whats fun about him is that he doesnt eat rice much, I really dont know why. Hes from San Pablo, and he knows ballet- yeah, thats a joke, but you should see his SOP, panalo e. Frog fact: His favorite mystical creatures are vampires, coincidentally he also hates cats. He dreams of being a vampire, maybe thats why he doesnt like eating rice, haha. Who knows? Celine Castueras. Ate Celine, the oldest of our batch is as nice, selfless, and considerate as a person can be. Fortunately for her, she has this sick, fragile aura that during the process the old members just makes her sing, which made me sort of worried during the finals. Also, this Batangas-girl can play the piano and spends wee time with anime. Frog fact: During high school, she referred to as Index Card Girl, she keeps ths index cards with her regularly and until now she still keeps them in a chest. Chacha Navarro. Chacha, of UP Oroquieta and MESS-UP, is as happy as a person can be, especially in front of the camera, you should see our photographs. At the batch, we sometimes call her bully, sungit kasi, kinukupal kami. But we love her so much still, shes from Sariaya, Quezon and she sings. Frog fact: She doesnt like being called ate by us or whoever unless youre her biological younger sibling, told you- sungit. (Joke) Jam Pascual. Our all-around-city-girl from San Juan is an optimistic person, bloc representative of C1, a volunteer- GABAY and she thinks of others oo, she usu. notices when someones down. She also dances, being a near-SJ member. She, along with Rusty, lives at Wisma-Gloria Shalom Apt. Frog fact: Notice her hair, this is the first time in her entire existence on Earth did she cut her hair. Jasper Castro. Sinong member ang sumasabog? E di si ryan BANG. Jasper is a man of few words, but a lot of talents, hidden though. He can also draw - really good, you should see his drawings, he plays the Harmonica, ping pong, and is from Biliran, Visayas. Hes also from Phil. Sciences High School and is also a DOST Scholar. Here at LB, he lives at Junction, wherever that may mean. Frog fact: Jaspers a baritone singer, a baritone can shift from Tenor to Bass. Jolanz Rodrigo. Our now-semi-bald Batch Leader from Calamba, is actually supposed to go to a Catholic seminary before deciding to go to UP. Hes a guy who exaggeratedly sleeps a lot, whenever hes got nothing to do he usually just sleeps. During the finals, his emotional peak was his encounter with the frogs, its nice to have him as our batch leader (plastik ako e no, joke :D). He looks

after us in ways more than I can write about. Frog fact: He cant keep still without his handkerchief, I think theres a probability hell panic. This gives me an idea for our next batch meeting (evil laugh). Krisell Vallestero. Krisell is one of the few people on earth that looks so mean that theres this one time someone exclaimed at her demanding Bat mo ko tinataryan?! while she has not changed her facial emotion during that encounter. Unlike her facial features, Krisells a fun girl, nice to be with. Also, shes to be awarded Best in attendance since starting from Elementary, shes never had any absent record. Frog facts: It was only until she became a college student did she learn to ride a jeepney and until now, she doesnt know/play any local street game. Leomel Abas. Kuya Leomel gets things he wants done, done; he has a commanding presence as his height speaks of that of course, I definitely envy his height. His height is over 6 feet thus he plays basketball well. Hes from Tanauan and he also knows how to play the guitar. Frog fact: He sleeps talks and before, sleep walks. Now thats scary. (Monsterr :D ) Lizette Sebuc. Ate Lizette panics. When pressure goes up, she goes trembling with uneasiness, but just as down that is shes actually a happy person, likes to talk a lot and is a transparent person. Shes from Tanauan, and is sporty, playing both badminton and pingpong. Frog fact: Health Addict alert, she doesnt eat hamburger, pizza and the likes. Pity, if she only knew what shes missing. Budz Silvestre. Favored by his looks, Budz is an almost-happy-go-lucky person, but he still has his serious side (whatever that means :D ). Hes not sure if hell finish his studies here since his dad, a Canadian resident, has plans of making him go there to study. Member of UP Eagles, Budz also plays the guitar and badminton. Frog fact: He got himself bit by a spider thinking he would turn into Spiderman. Lucky that spiders not venomous. Kulot Cedeo. Mr. Tubaw form Davao City is a person youd enjoy spending time with he makes

you feel at ease, hes also really considerate and a guy who generally just go with the flow, and he plays the drums. Frog fact: Whenever Martin loses himself and drifts away from reality, pag natutulala, youll find his jaw dropped, nakanganga lang.
Nath Claveria. Sinong member ang hindi? E di si Nath. The best joke award goes to Nath. Ate Nath is a certified girl scout and a mountain climber for that matter, you should refer to the size of her bag, its that size whatever time of the day, wherever she might be. Shes easy to be with, and is really nice, caring for the batch as a whole. Shes from Oriental Mindoro. Frog fact: She was part of the choir during her elementary years. Paolo Naredo. Junior Tristan is a swimmer and just like Jam and Budz, recently just ended their love lives, Im not sure if thats updated though. Hes from Calamba, and is extravagantly fond of smiling. Hes also a transparent guy, I once reported with him and I think he opens anything with anyone. Oh, FYI, most of our late batch meeting was held at their place at Vista del Rey. Frog fact: Resourceful person that he is, he thought of a way of conserving his fart and thought of doing it by farting it in his pillow, he says the smell is still intact till now. Rusty Placino. Mr. Itodo-mo has also considered being in a Catholic seminary before studying here. Hes also a valedictorian-high school, and is a DOST Scholar. He is really really good at playing piano. As a person, hes really approachable and open of what hes thinking. Frog fact: Hes originally a curlyhaired person, the hair person told him not to cut his hair to avoid curling again, but when he was to cut his bangs, sad part it got curly again. Cedie Duller. Innocence is defined by his face, thus his nickname, Cedie, from Prinsipeng Cedie cartoons. I remember one time, as I was reporting, I was asked why he was allowed to join since hes so young. Beats me. Hes from Sta. Cruz and he originally want to take up BS Biology. Frog fact: Hes taking up photography courses, especially favors picturing sunsets, and his camera was the one we used for our pictures.

First of all, I want to introduce myself. My name is Sophia and I am a friend you never met. Let me tell you a story about some things that happen in my life recently. If you are interested, you can continue reading and if not, just drop this paper and continue doing your routines feeling so regretful of the friendship we could have built. If youre still following to what I am saying right now, congratulations! You made the right choice. I am born to live. I love my life, and I am addicted to it. I am good at many things but being free-spirited is what I do best. I abide my own rules. Ive got wonderful friends and family. Ive got everything else seem so perfect, yet I still feel empty.

Dear You,

I am born to live. I love my life, and I am addicted to it. I am good at many things but being free-spirited is what I do best. I abide my own rules. Ive got wonderful friends and family. Ive got everything else seem so perfect, yet I still feel empty.
Am I really happy? Are you really happy? They say you can only know if youre actually happy if you are alone but you can still manage to smile. But I say happiness is when some things are falling but

you are flying. You may fail a subject, got into a fight with your parents, ignored by a friend or got your heart broken, whatever is that in your life right now, those are just part of a greater destiny that waits for you. You see, it is a matter of perspective. If youll concentrate on the negatives there is, indeed your life would be miserable. But if you try to see beyond what your eyes can perceive, youll be shocked with lifes surprises. So what if you failed a subject because you need more training or youre not meant to be on that career? So what if your parents get mad because they truly love you? So what if you got ignored because you did something wrong in the first place? So what if you got your heart broken because you deserve more love? Dont be blinded with the not-so-nice experiences you have. Let them be the foundation of your life. Remember that the strongest people are those who had greater problems, and get through it. Well, I am really happy. I am happy despite of the many problems I am facing and problems that are coming. The world may give me all the reasons to be sad but there will always be something that could make me smile. I hope you can see that light in your darkness as well. Being happy has always been and will always be a choice. So decide to be happy, my friend. And lets get the best out of our lives.

Student Organizations in the University of the Philippines are known for their activities mostly promoting education, awareness, student camaraderie and health. Indeed, the partaking of the organizations in these simple but meaningful projects is remarkable evidence that UP students take the name Iskolar Para sa Bayan into their hearts. Indeed aims of the organizations in their projects are mostly undoubtedly noble and commendable. However, an organization in the University of the Philippines- Diliman, took their gracious commitment into a bolder stand. The Alpha Phi Omega (APO) Sorority organized a public run in order to venerate their stand for the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill on August 1. APO sorority is the first UP student organization to boldly declare their stand in RH bill. Many prominent people attended the run including politicians who approved their endeavor. The run for the RH bill is perhaps an awakening call for UP student organizations. That while their present activities are laudable, it is perchance the time for taking a bolder stand in order to promote student awareness regarding national issues. Just by declaring a stand in these vital national issues, a student organization can influence students into re-evaluating their opinions and stands. As Rizal had put it and as much as it is always quoted, the youth especially those who study in the university revered by country, are the hopes of the nation. The little steps UP students take for taking a stand might be single steps for us indeed but perhaps, this is what the Filipino nation needs in order to build a giant leap for the country. Suffice it is to say that Iskolar Para sa Bayan can always take it one more step forward.
