EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and the society around us. In an industry where emotional intelligence of its staff is properly directed, channelized, modulated and applied, the efficiency and output is much superior and fulfilling. The HR department of most of the industries are keen on implementing EI model for smooth effective and proficient functioning. The key components of emotional intelligence are: 1. Self-Awareness: High self awareness is tuning in to the sensations you feel and being able to name which Emotion is happening at any given time. People experience an average of 27 emotions every waking hour. Rather than ignoring a feeling, the goal is to move toward it, into it, and eventually through it. y Emotional Awareness: Recognizing ones emotions and their effects. y Accurate Self-Assessment: Knowing ones strengths and limits. y Self-Confidence: Able to have a presence and be self-assured. 2. Self-Management: Self-management is your ability to use the awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and direct behaviour positively. y Self-Control: Managing disruptive emotions and impulses y Trustworthiness: Maintaining standards of honesty and integrity y Conscientiousness: Taking responsibility for personal performance y Adaptability: Flexibility in handling change

3. Social Awareness: Emotional intelligence is both tuning into your own feelings and tuning into the feelings of those around us. Empathy is being able to see from anothers perspective. y Empathy: Sensing others feelings and perspective and taking an active interest in their concerns. y Service Orientation: Anticipating, recognizing and meeting needs. y Political Awareness: Reading a groups emotional current and power relationships. 4. Relationship Management: Mastering the abilities of self-awareness, self management, and social awareness pave the way for more effective relationships. This fourth component, relationship management, is about interacting with people and being adept at managing emotions in others. y Influence: Using effective tactics of persuasion y Communication: Sending clear and convincing messages y Collaboration and Cooperation: Working well with others toward shared goals
