Sensors and Actuator Network Based Architectures and Protocols for Smart Homes Bluetooth enabled Smart Home
Number of Students: 2 Background: A smart home requires three main elements, which are internal networking, intelligent control and home automation. Internal network is at the core of a smart home and may be either wired or wireless. The intelligent control deals with gateways to manage the system, such as microcontrollers and home automation deals with products in the home that links to services and systems outside the home. Home automation deals with the specific automation

requirements of homes and in the application of automation techniques for the comfort and security of its residents. This can include controlling the lights, climate control, control of doors and windows, security and surveillance systems. There are currently several products on the market that allow home owners to control these devices.
Description and Requirements: In this project, students are expected to do the following tasks:

1. Literature Review: Conduct an extensive survey of existing literature on smart homes

including current proposals and commercial products focusing on devices which utilize the Bluetooth technology.

2. Develop Bluetooth Appliance Controller: A microcontroller will interface with the Bluetooth module to perform the automation. A simple microcontroller will receive signals from the cell phone and will be processed. 3. Develop Software for a Bluetooth Enables Mobile Device: An application will need to be developed using the J2ME java platform for programs running on mobile devices using the Java APIs for Bluetooth Wireless. 4. Conduct Experiments and Analyse Data: Using the mobile device and the appliance
controller, conduct tests on usability and product range within a home environment.

5. Deliverables: The end product of this project is a report, a copy of the mobile software
on CD and a Bluetooth enabled appliance controller. References
