Before intervening, the narrator spots another man by the window who notices them, lights a cigarette, and warns them to run, which the narrator does in fear.

    CHAPTER 1-THE DAY WHEN IT ALL STARTED

    It was midnight. I was reading in my bed. All was really quiet; strange, indeed, because one of my neighbors and his wife were always arguing until they fell asleep. Anyway, it was good having a relaxing night, at last! But Im not very lucky, so... Suddenly, a strange sound came from the floor above: It was my other neighbour, Ben. Mister Evans and his wife were always shouting out loud at night and when they at last, decided to sleep, Ben always thought that, that was the perfect moment to begin working on his experiments. My flat was full of strange people!! I couldnt stand the strange noises he was doing, so I got out of my bed and went up stairs to talk to Ben; at least he was understanding. I knocked at the door, but it was already opened. -How weird-I thought. Ben didnt use to leave the door open...A shiny light came from somewhere in his apartment. What could be? Entering his house without permission wasnt right, but after all, the end justifies the means... I moved away the door and finally entered on the apartment. The light came from the last room of the corridor. The rest of the house was in semidarkness, and cold, too...I moved forward and discovered that the window of the living room was open. The curtains seemed to be ghosts! -Youll tell me what I want to know NOW!! YOU, BLITHERING IDIOT!-cried an unpleasant voice. That wasnt Ben, I was sure of that. This voice seemed to come from the light room. -I dont know anything, I swear it!-that was Ben. What I could do? Firstly I thought that helping him was the obvious option, but before I could move, I saw something on the living room... A MAN!! He was next to the curtains. How I couldnt see him?? I was immobile. Maybe he hasnt seen me...- I thought. But then, he lighted a cigarette and said: -You should run, lady, shouldnt you?-and thats exactly what I did...
