Effect of Global Recession:

Most of the people (around 60%) feel that global recession has affected the Bahamians people. Main impacts come out like loss of jobs, price rise, and crime rate gone up. I think that it hit us hard,A lot of people are jobless,Homes have been lost,Break up alot of marriages,Crime,Robbery (Female, 26-33 years, Seabreeze). Alot of people out of jobs, People losing homes, Hard on alot of people andPeople can t pay their bills. (34-41 years, Carmichael) It has really affected us very much. A lot of people are suffering. A lot of people are out of jobs, they had to take their children out of private schools, they are only living by the grace of God (55 years and more, Elizabeth). Also tourism sector is the major affected area. Severely, because we are so dependent on international finance, once the recession set in the tourist stopped coming and the banks stopped lending. (55 years and above, Bamboo Town). The recession really really hit full force in 2008 and then from then, our tourism numbers dropped up until last year, when it started to increase again. So I think it really just affected us on the tourism side. (18-25 years, Fox Hill) Some people feel that it has affected but not that bad it has affected the world and also they feel that they survive that sock with the help of government and God grace and things are getting better now. It s been bad because some people lost their homes and their jobs, but I see that the FNM have some programmes for at least a year to help some people catch themselves, so it s bittersweet (Female, 18-25 years, Carmichael). I sure we didn t feel it like other people has feel it. They are just using it for as an excuse just in case something didn t go right. It make have took a toll on some people but it is not as bad. (18-25 years, Seabreeze). Don t really see where we going through a recession, you know. Everybody still shopping. The Mall was packed for Christmas. (Male, 34-41 years, Faith Garden). Going over all the interviews there are lots of reasons are coming up like how recession has affected to the people of Bahamas. Only small percentage of people feels that government is responsible for the worse situation.
