Assessment of this unit applies to the use of various hand tools, including
but not limited to hacksaws, hammers, punches, screwdrivers, sockets,
wrenches, scrapers, chisels, gouges, wood planes and files of all crosssectional shapes and types.
Assessment may apply to work undertaken autonomously or in a team
environment using predetermined standards of quality, safety and
workshop procedures.
Applications may include hand tools used for adjusting, dismantling,
assembling and finishing of items or components and the finishing, cutting
and scraping of metallic and non-metallic material to size and shape.
This unit should not be selected if the hand tool is dedicated to a single
operation or machine and if only a machine-specific/customised tool is
used.
This unit may be assessed on or off the job or in a combination of both on
and off the job.

Suggested evidence gathering methods

Observation
Observation is a popular assessment method, because it is direct and
authentic. However, it will often need to be supplemented by other
forms of assessment to obtain sufficient evidence of all aspects of
competence.
The assessee may be observed:

using hand tools

working autonomously or in a team

communicating information about processes, events or tasks being

undertaken to ensure a safe and efficient working environment

using accepted engineering techniques, practices, processes and

workplace procedures

selecting appropriate personal protective clothing and safety

equipment to be used when using hand tools

identifying common faults and/or defects in hand tools and following

the procedures for marking unsafe or faulty tools

Oral questioning
Oral questioning is a useful way of checking knowledge, areas that
are not directly observed, and what if? situations. In this unit, oral
questioning may be used to assess:
Knowledge and understanding of:

accepted engineering techniques, practices, processes and workplace

procedures
Skills in:

taking responsibility for the quality of their own work

planning tasks in all situations and reviewing task requirements as

appropriate

identifying the outcomes and job specifications to be achieved by the

use of hand tools

identifying the routine maintenance requirements of a range of hand

tools

identifying the procedures and techniques to be used in

maintaining/sharpening a range of hand tools

Documentary evidence
Documentary evidence may include:

Use hand tools

Page 1

third party reports from supervisors, referees or others

evidence of successfully completed courses
duty statements (provided these show clear links to the relevant units)
resumes (provided these show clear links to the relevant units and can
be verified independently)
