What are interests? Interests are the things you want, but generally things that are negotiable. One bear on the last slide wanted help with the housework; the other wanted to go out with the guys. Consider the classic orange story.

Positions are demands people make:

Againyou deal with these differences in different ways. Interest conflicts usually can be negotiated, mediated, or sometimes arbitrated. Intractable conflicts at least need to be mediated; often addressed through dialogue, problem solving, or other longer-lasting methods.
